I recently visited a congregation in our area just to check on how they are progressing. The pastor told me that whilst the church was financially viable, there was an unwillingness on the part of the church to invest to host a website. He told me that he was keen to embrace and use new technology tools to expand and enhance the ministry of the church. There was however no corresponding support from the rest of the team.According to this Anglican clergy, this was a congregation that will always have the funds to do the things they deem really important. The issue of the website and all stories about the sufficiency and adequacy of the blog is therefore not about money but priorities.
I suspect that whilst congregations will always decry that they do not like change, in most cases the issue is about control. Perhaps we can go round this problem by introducing change one at a time and ensuring that as we introduce a new thing we do not throw away the old thing straight away. Yes the attitude of the congregation can be discouraging but do not give up.
We can not mistake the functions of the blog for those of the website. In my view a blog is rather static whilst a website is live. Websites have the ability to interconnect data.Let us take for instance a church with an upcoming event. A static site can simply announce and give information about the event. A live website on the contrary can be able to provide information, allow for online registration including online payment of any fees required, provide for reservation for childcare or even listen to some views of those with previous experience of the event.
My advice to the churches is to ensure your website is a perfect reflection of your church. Let it be an extension of your church's outreach, discipleship worship as well as all areas expressed on your mission statement.
Your comments about control are spot on. Often it is not the change that is the issue but how it is introduced. A good way to assess a congregation's values is to look at where they spend their money. And the control of the money can often be vested in a small power block. Also the comment about the wedsite as a perfect representaion of your church is so important because while the website brings people to your door it is the faith comminity that brings them back again.
